It is that time of year... another Holiday season has snuck right in. The season for being thankful, for counting blessings, surrounding ourselves with family, friends, and of course awesome food. But if you are old enough... no I didn't say OLD, I said old enough, then you remember back when the Holiday season was still sacred instead of being fueled by greed.
The Holiday season once was a time of year where not only the day itself, but even the eve was celebrated and everything closed... not a few hours, not a half day, closed for two entire days and if you didn't get what you needed before they closed, then it sucked to be you!
Now everything is fueled by holiday sales, pre holiday sales and even yet, pre pre holiday sales. People fill themselves with Thanksgiving day feasts before bundling up and going out in the cold to camp out on the sidewalk for stores to open at 4 am!! The bars have just closed, the drunks have not even had time to hit a greasy spoon to sober up yet and people are in line freezing to fight or be trampled over a last sale item on the shelf.
I went to a few stores tonight to get a few things for my dinner tomorrow, and my meds. If I didn't need my meds I probably would not have went into the madness at all. One stop I made was the Dollar Tree. Now those of you that are like me and shop at ANY Dollar Tree already knows there will be a line a mile long with only one register open. Well tonight, there was a line a mile long with four other cashiers standing at the end of the register aisle all doing absolutely nothing but standing there gossiping. One had the nerve to say that she didn't think it would be this busy today. Wait, what??!!
Now let's break this down shall we? You are a Dollar Tree where everything in the store is one dollar. You sell pans, turkey cooking bags, foil, plates, containers and every other thing you may need for cooking a Thanksgiving dinner... what part of any of that led you to believe that you would not be busy today?! But the best part was, she went on to say that the people were not even buying things for tomorrow, they were looking for and buying Christmas stuff!! I mean the turkey isn't even completely thawed in the fridge yet and people are running each other down for Christmas stuff?? I still cannot wrap my head around the idea of movies opening on Christmas Day and people actually going to the theater to see them. (and still do not get me started on the banana slicer lol)
I have said it before and I will say it again this year... I am so glad I am not one of those shoppers that will be out brawling for Black Friday items. I couldn't do it. This world wants what they want when they want it and would lose their freaking minds if things were like they were 25 or even 30 yrs ago.
The Holiday season has always been a time for family and to make people have to work and drag them away from their family is appalling to me. Think of a single mother who has to work because she has to support her child, and now she is going to miss that child's first Christmas, waking up to see presents Santa left under the tree. That is one of the best Christmas mornings ever, a first one, and because of the greed in this world a mother has to miss that memory and it will be gone forever. It is really sad and it breaks my heart.
Unfortunately, I am just one person with an opinion and this world is going to just keep on getting greedier. I am sorry but there is nothing anyone needs that badly... not from a store or a sale anyways.
Like the Judds song, Grandpa Tell Me Bout The Good Ole Days. I miss the good old days!!
A safe and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!
Much Luv!! xo
